Raymond Baker

Grafton |

Raymond Wallace Baker passed peacefully on February 12, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Ray was the youngest surviving of eight children born to John and Mary Ann (Springman) Baker of Jerseyville, IL. His brother Norman remains. Ray spent his early work years as an auto mechanic and never lost his love of cars. He went on to become a master carpenter. During his formative years, he became an enthusiast of kids sports. He enjoyed nothing more than coaching, fishing, camping and laughing with all kinds of kids. Dad had many interests and several passions. He was a gifted writer, he enjoyed reading and loved sports and music. He and his wife Marilyn spent their retirement as compassionate care-givers to critters of all types. They spent many hours enjoying nature at their home in Grafton. Dad leaves behind Marilyn Campbell, his adoring wife of 29 years who shares his sly sense of humor. He is survived by six children, Kathy (Rich) Lawson, Steve (Kathy) Baker, Chris (Ken) Hall, Tim (Kelly) Hazelwonder, Scott (Julie) Propst, and Tracy Yewell, many grandchildren and great grands. Peggy Knopp remains a friend and supporter to Marilyn and Dad. Services were private. There is to be a celebration of life at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Do Drop Inn. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or an animal shelter of choice. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements. Online guestbook and information may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
