Raymond Rogers

With hope in Christ, the family of beloved Raymond Lee Rogers would like to share that he has died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 13, 2016. Ray was born January 12, 1926 in Mexico, KY the son of the late Cavit and Vada (Teer) Rogers. He graduated from Francis High School in April of 1944. On April 27, 1944 he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served with great patriotic pride in a quartermaster depot company in the Philippines and Japan during WWII. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946 as a Sergeant. He went on to graduate from Evansville College in 1951 with a BA in secondary education with a business major and a history minor. In July 1951 he went to work for Standard Oil of Indiana in Evansville, IN then he transferred to Wood River, Cape Girardeau, MO and back to Wood River. Ray enjoyed being active with his family, including golfing, hunting, tennis, coaching grade school soccer, lots of Cardinals baseball, fishing and yard work. He retired from Amoco Oil as a fleet director in January of 1986. Ray was an active member and elder of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. On August 28, 1953 he married Mary Lee Lubbers and she preceded him in death on July 28, 1979. On November 9, 1980 he married Dorothy Haake (Herter). Also surviving are six sons, Bryant Rogers of Alton, Mark Rogers of Chicago, Jason (Melissa) Herter of Troy, IL, Eric (Casey) Herter of Maryland Heights, MO, Kevin (Abby) Rogers of Bloomington, IL and Major Paul (Krysten) Rogers of Santa Maria, CA, seven grandchildren, Sydney Herter, Jayne Herter, Claire Herter, Grant Herter, Andrew Herter, Addison Rogers and Riley Rogers, three siblings, Wanda Rogers of Penrose, CO, Patricia (David) Marr of Pahrump, NV and Leon (Betty) Rogers of Memphis, TN and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter, Cheryl Ann Rogers and siblings, Juanita Peck, Cavit Rogers Jr, Dorothy Rogers, Sylvia Rogers, John Ed Rogers, and Perry Rogers. Visitation will be from 4:00 -8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Visitation will continue at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Bill Roper, Reverend Willard Meyer, Reverend Mark Hofferber and Reverend Kale Hanson officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Ray was a quiet and gracious rock to his family and friends. He will be missed terribly and remembered lovingly. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Grace Place Lutheran Wellness or Bible Study Fellowship.
