Raymond E. “Ray” Bucher, 89, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. He left this world peacefully with his entire family surrounding him. Born January 22, 1928 in Cairo, IL, he was the son of Aloysius C. “Dutch” and Ruby (Copeland) Bucher. Ray was a Corporal with the U.S. Army serving in Japan during the Korean War and was a former member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville. He owned and operated Bucher Glass Co., Inc. until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Godfrey Knights of Columbus and a 20-year member of the New Horizons Band. An avid hunter and fisherman, Ray was also a founding board member of the Godfrey Sportsman’s Club Pleasant Hill. On October 14, 1950, he married his wife of 66 years, Sherry Greathouse. Ray is survived by his wife, Sherry, two sons Mike (Jan) Bucher of Godfrey, Ed Bucher of Chicago; and four daughters, Linda (Brad) Wheaton of Godfrey, Carol (Pat) Kerwin of Dallas, TX, Mari (Paul) Fahrendorf of O’Fallon, MO, and Anne (Ted) Palles of Dallas, TX. Additionally, he is survived by 22 grandchildren, and a brother Robert (Josephine) Bucher of Godfrey. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Jon Bucher, a brother, Donald “Diz” Bucher and a sister, Mary Kay “Kacky” Booher. A celebration of his life will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2017 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Marquette Catholic High School, Village of Godfrey Parks, or a memorial of your choice.
