Ralph John Zerr

Ralph John Zerr, 84, died at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at his home. Born May 14, 1930 in St. Charles, MO, he was the son of Ralph and Clara (Schneider) Zerr. Mr. Zerr served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1952 and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1308. He was also a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and was a 4th Degree Knight with the Alton Knights of Columbus. He retired as head of the motor pool for Ameren in 1992 after 20 years of service. He enjoyed his annual canoe trip with his extended family and he was his grandchildren’s biggest fan and followed all of their activities. His favorite team was Mississippi State Bulldogs led by special pitcher/friend, Alexis Silkwood. On May 14, 1960 he married the former Joyce Godar. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Janet Zerr and her friend John Uhl of Alton, and Kathleen Wittich (Joseph) of Godfrey, three grandchildren, Eric, Christopher and Megan Wittich, a very special nephew, Mark Zerr, six brothers and sisters, Sr. Lucille Zerr, SSND of St. Louis, MO, Margaret Meyer (Vernon) of St. Charles, MO, Robert Zerr (Sarah) of Kansas City, MO, Bernard Zerr (Diana) of Bella Vista, AK, Ronald Zerr (Shelia) of Berkley Springs, WV, and Paul Zerr (Mary Ann) of St. Charles, MO, and his baby, a Maltese dog named Mia. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Zerr. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2015 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
