Ralph "Gene" E Cardwell, 90, passed away at 4:30 am on Saturday, September 30, 2023 in Alton, IL.
He was born on June 1, 1933 in East Alton, IL to Wilson James and Ruby (Young) Cardwell.
He married Shirley Hillis on December 31, 1980 in Peoria, IL.
Gene was a mechanic at Allied Handling Equipment before retiring in 1990. He was a member of Bethalto Church of God and enjoyed helping his community. Gene was a board member at Meadowbrook Water Department from 1995 to 2005 and volunteered at Community Hope Center from 1995-2015. He loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife, Shirley, as well as three sons, Don Cardwell, Russell Wolf, III, Justin Cardwell; and two brothers, Jerry (Debbie) Cardwell, Bob Cardwell; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a son, Ralph E. Cardwell Jr.; two daughters, Debbie Stratton and Debra Wolf; his brother, Wilson Cardwell, Jr.; and three sisters, Anna Pearl McLain, Maxine Suttles, and Mary Lou Turner.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 4th, 2023 at Bethalto Church of God from 10 am until time of services at noon. Pastor Jacob Skelton will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the Community Hope Center.
