Phyllis Ann Mezo, age 89, of Granite City, IL, passed away on January 1, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, IL. Phyllis was born on August 17, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, IL, a daughter of the late Ernest and Josie (Butler) Bloxam.
On December 17, 1955, Phyllis Bloxam married John E. Mezo, the love of her life in Mt. Vernon, IL, and John preceded Phyllis in death on November 19, 1998.
Phyllis was a dedicated worker, and she started her career at Obear-Nester Glass Company in East St. Louis, IL, where she worked for over twenty years. She then went to work and retired from K-Mart in Granite City, IL, for over twenty years as well.
Phyllis was a member of Suburban Baptist Church, now Unity Baptist Church in Granite City, IL. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She was also an amazing cook, and she enjoyed the time spent cooking and baking with her family.
Phyllis never met a stranger, and she was also mom to all the neighborhood children. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Phyllis will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents and husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by her sisters, Nancy Connor and Edith Oslager.
Phyllis is survived by her loving children, Michael (Sarah) Mezo of Muncie, IN, Gail Mezo of Granite City, IL, Lori (Craig) Kalogerou of Glen Carbon, IL, John (Kimberly) Mezo Jr. of Prosper, TX and Joni Mezo of Granite City, IL; proud grandmother to Ashley (Art) Oppermann, Leslie (Adam) Lancaster, Adrianne (Wesley) Hughes, Blanche Mezo, Brighton Mezo and Berkeley Mezo; proud great-grandmother to Addison, Bliss, Levi, Ainsley, Phyllis, Franklin and Alexandra; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL.
In celebration of her life, the funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL, with Pastor David Denton officiating. Phyllis will be laid to rest next to John at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, IL.
