Philip Cuvar
Granite City | Save
Philip Michael Cuvar, age 87, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, with his beloved family by his side. His life was a tapestry of devotion, craftsmanship, and quiet strength—a legacy that will echo through generations.
Born on October 2, 1938, in Granite City, Philip was the cherished son of John Cuvar Sr. and Margaret (Oros) Cuvar. On February 21, 1959, he married Patsy “Pat” Derrow, the love of his life, at Concordia Lutheran Church—a sacred place where he remained a lifelong and faithful member. Their marriage of sixty-six years was a shining example of enduring love and partnership.
Philip dedicated forty-two years to Granite City Steel as an electrician control specialist, where his skill and integrity earned the respect of all who worked alongside him. But his true passion soared above the clouds. From the moment he first took flight as a young boy, Philip was captivated by aviation. He earned his pilot’s license early in life and could not only fly planes—he could build, repair, and understand them with remarkable precision.
He found joy in casting a fishing line into quiet waters or flying through the clouds. His greatest happiness came from time spent with those he loved. Philip was a man of quiet wisdom, steady hands, and a heart full of devotion. He will be remembered as a hardworking family man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Joan McCracken and Steve Cuvar.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pat Cuvar; his children, Bryan (Karen) Cuvar, Michael Cuvar, and Lisa Funkhouser; his siblings, John Cuvar Jr. and Jeanette Pinkston; and his grandchildren, Michael Cuvar, David Funkhouser, Stephanie Cuvar, Matthew Funkhouser, and Nicholas Cuvar. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives he touched with kindness and grace.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel in Granite City.
A celebration of Philip’s life will take place on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Irwin Chapel, officiated by Rev. Brian Feicho. Philip will be laid to rest at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville, Illinois.
In honor of Philip’s generous spirit, memorial donations may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Contributions will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
