Paul J. Springer Sr., 78, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013 at home with family by his side.
He was born in West Alton, MO at home on June 27, 1934, the son of the late Reverend Joseph and Mamie (Malson) Springer. He was one of thirteen children. He married the former Barbara Jean Neuling on January 8, 1956 in West Alton, MO and they shared 34 years together before her death on November 24, 1989. They had three children. On June 8, 2003, in West Alton, MO, he married the former Carole Jeanne (Watkins) Velloff and she survives.
He was formerly employed as a truck driver with Springman Lumber, Walter Transfer, Orscheln Bros. Truck Lines, Key Way Truck Lines, and ABF Truck Lines prior to his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Teamsters AFL-CIO. After retiring he was employed by Springer Brothers Concrete/Construction, Norman Bros. Barge Line and Saale Farm & Grain retiring a second time in 2003. He was a member of the West Alton First Church of God and for the last 10 years had attended Calvary Baptist Church in Alton.
Pastime he liked to travel with is RV trailer; spend time with friends, family and two special grandchildren, Amber Leah and Hannah Marie Samples, church, and listening to good old fashion gospel music.
Other survivors include two sons; Paul Joseph Springer Jr. of Hazelwood, MO and Jeffery Lynn Springer (Becky) of St. Peters, MO; a daughter, Pamela Irene Springer of Nashville, TN. Step-children; Laura Rodgers of St. Charles, MO, Mark Velloff (Tina) of Memphis, TN and Amy Samples (Tim) of Grafton. Grandchildren; Amber Leah and Hannah Marie Samples of Grafton. Four step-grandchildren; Amelia Rodgers of Portland, OR, Alex Rodgers of St. Charles, MO, Krysten Velloff of Nashville, TN, and Joshua Velloff of Memphis, TN. Six brothers; Dale Springer (Rosemary) of Colorado Springs, CO, Don Springer (Angela) of Herman, MO, Jack Springer (Edna) of Godfrey, Gene Springer of Brighton, Bobby Springer (Willadean) of West Alton, MO, and Karl Springer (Priscilla) of Brighton. Three sisters, Doris Macke of Marissa, IL, Janice Samples (Herb) of Brighton, and Judith Price of Le Claire, IA.
He was preceded in death by parents, and three sisters, Lois Elaine Springer, Evelyn Perry, and Stella Keene.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. Reverend Andre’ Dobson and Reverend Kelvin Lustick will officiate. Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in West Alton, MO.
