Paul Bagby

Paul Elsworth Bagby Sr., 79, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Christian Northeast Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

Born on December 9, 1946, in East St. Louis, Illinois, Paul was the cherished son of the late Sherman and Lauranel (Bost) Bagby. Throughout his life, he exemplified dedication, integrity, and a deep love for his family.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Paul served his country honorably and carried that same sense of commitment into every aspect of his life. On June 20, 1969, he married the love of his life, Karen Cottrell, in Granite City. Together they shared more than 57 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, devotion, and family.

Paul retired from Illinois Bell after many years of dedicated service as a Journeyman, earning the respect of both coworkers and friends through his strong work ethic and dependable nature.

Outside of work, Paul embraced life's simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course, admired the craftsmanship and history of antique automobiles, and never missed an opportunity to attend train shows. Whether pursuing his hobbies or sharing stories with friends, Paul's greatest happiness was always found in the company of those he loved. His family was the center of his world, and the memories they created together will forever be treasured.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Karen Putman.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Karen Bagby of Granite City, Illinois; his loving son, Paul Bagby Jr. of Granite City; his treasured granddaughter, Lauren Bagby of Bethalto, Illinois; his dear brother, Dwayne (Debbie) Bagby of Maryville, Illinois; along with nieces, nephews, extended family members, many cherished friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Paul will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, kind heart, and the love he so generously gave to his family and friends. His legacy of service, dedication, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.

A graveside service celebrating Paul's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, where full military honors will be accorded by the United States Army. Family and friends are asked to gather at Irwin Chapel in Granite City by 10:15 a.m., with the funeral procession departing promptly at 10:30 a.m.
