Patrick James Palumbo, 84, formerly of Montgomery, Il., died peacefully at 11:50 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Jan. 31, 1927, in Chicago, to the Gossetti family, and was lovingly raised by the Palumbo family after the death of his mother during his birth. He graduated from Austin High School in Chicago, and graduated from the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana.He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, and began his teaching career in Jersey Community High School.Eventually, he and his wife, relocated their family to Montgomery, Il., where he began a career in manufacturing management with several companies in the Chicago and Fox Valley areas.He was a talented artist & woodworker, and was an avid sports fan, following his grandchildrens athletic activities, and was particularly proud of his grandson, Michael Hoomanawanui, a starting tight end for the St. Louis Rams.He married Jersey County native, Patricia Ann Allen on July 3, 1954 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and they shared 57 years together before her passing on July 21, 2011.Surviving are his three children and their spouses, Philip Allen & Loyce Palumbo of Riverwoods, Mary Elizabeth & Robert Podlogar of Racine, Wi., and Anne Christine Hoomanawanui of Normal; four grandchildren and their spouses, Joseph Patrick & Lindsay Palumbo of Chicago, Mary Margaret "Maggie" Hoomanawanui of Chicago, Michael Patrick Hoomanawanui of St. Peters, Mo., and Christine Clark of Chicago. He is also survived by his wife's siblings, whom have been very devoted and loyal to him, Thomas Allen of Edwardsville, Barbara Burge, Margaret & George Wittman, and Kathy & Jerry Wittman all of Jerseyville; along with numerous nieces and nephews and a caring and loving caregiver, Terri.Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Wednesday until 2:45 p.m., at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 3 p.m., Wednesday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military honors.Memorials may be given to the Jersey County Health Department in honor of the care received throughout the years.
