P. Elaine Wood, 82, passed away at 8:08pm on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. She was born August 13, 1929, in Pierson, Illinois the daughter of the late Wayne and Hazel Russell. She married Robert Wood in September of 1950, and he preceded her in death on September 19, 1991. Survivors include two sons and daughters in law: Steve and Missy Wood of Newport News, Virginia and Denny and Melody Wood of Anchorage, Alaska, six grandchildren, Scott Wood of Bunker Hill, Stacie Portugal of Bunker Hill, Samantha Railton of Newport News, Virginia, Josh and Jason Wood of Anchorage, Alaska and Nicole Gilbert of Niceville, FL, and eleven great grandchildren, Austin, Jacob, Cameron, Ethan, Aaron, Haley, Natalyn, Ava, Deagan, Schuyler and Abbie, two brothers and sisters in law: Phillip and Francis Russell of Edwardsville and Gordon and Carol Russell of Bethalto and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was raised in the Wanda area and attended the Wanda School, a 2 room schoolhouse. She graduated from East Alton Wood River High School. Her and her husband really loved each other and were inseparable on trips and outings. They loved to go on fishing vacations and were able to travel to Hong Kong, Japan and the Philippines and Alaska numerous times. They lived in Wanda until 1965 then moved to Bunker Hill. Elaine worked for Owens Illinois Glass in Alton as the Mold Shop Comptroller. After retirement, they moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida in 1988. After Bob's death in 1991, she stayed in Florida for 14 more years and after getting chased by too many hurricanes she decided to move back to Alton. She was a member of the Wanda United Methodist Church. She loved attending the "Cousins Lunch" and loved to sew anything and everything. Her jackets and quilts are legendary and if you are the proud owner of one you have a treasure.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. In celebration of her life, memorial visitation will be from 2pm until time of memorial services at 4pm on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Wanda United Methodist Church. Rev. Gerald Savage will officiate. Private burial will be at a later date at the Florida National Cemetery near Ocala, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wanda United Methodist Church.
