Otto Jr

Godfrey |

Otto Floyd Berg Jr., 80, received eternal rest on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 8:40 a.m. at Evelyn’s House, BJC Hospice, in Creve Coeur, MO, with his wife and son by his side. Otto was born February 23, 1938 in Alton, IL, the son of the late Otto Floyd Berg Sr. and Iva Florence (Collins) Berg, both deceased. He lived his earlier life in Hillview, IL, and later moved with his parents to Alton, where he attended Alton High School, graduating in 1956. Otto joined the U.S. Navy that same year where he served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt a carrier stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, and received an Honorable Discharge in 1960. Later, Otto was employed as a machinist for many years at Owens Illinois Glass in Alton until it closed in 1983. Otto married the former Martha Darlene Bailey of Godfrey, IL on March 24, 1962 and she survives. They had two sons, Jeffrey A. Berg who passed on May 6, 2007 and Bryan J. Berg, who survives. As a young boy, Bryan followed his Dad everywhere. Nothing was more interesting to Bryan than getting into Dad’s tools and the passion still remains today. Bryan, and his companion, Babette Connor, moved in with Otto during the summer of 2018 as Darlene was recovering from an illness. Otto’s brother-in-law, Keith R. Bailey of Delhi, his niece Kathy A. (Bailey) Gvillo of Bunker Hill, IL and a cousin, Ginny Ward, were very helpful and supportive to Otto and Darlene at this time. Otto left behind one sister, Sally (Berg) Long of Godfrey. He also left behind many special nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and son Jeff, Otto was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Berg, of Alton, a sister, Georgia (Berg) Dawdy of Winchester, IL. Otto enjoyed two best friends, who survive, Ed and his son, Ben, for many years with many fun times and close interests; repairing small tractors, primitive gun club activities, and the ability to repair anything with a motor while sharing many laughs. Otto requested his body be cremated and no visitation or funeral arrangements be made. He will remain with his wife Darlene until she passes, at which time he will be buried with her at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association for research purposes in St. Louis, MO or Evelyn’s House, BJC Hospice, of Creve Coeur, MO.
