Nicholas “Nick” “Red” Hayes, 78, passed away at 9:20 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.He was born December 7, 1938, in Gillespie, Illinois, the son of Albert and Florence (Leatherby) Hayes.He married Elsie M. Wallis on June 21, 1961, in Carlinville, Illinois. She survives.Nick worked for Laclede Steel for 31 years prior to his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist church and enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs, playing poker, stock car racing in the mid 1970’s at Godfrey Speedway and spending time with his family and friends.In addition to his wife, survivors include six children, Debbie Miller of Avon, Illinois, Patti Becker of Cottage Hills, Kenneth Hayes (Candace Sunderland) of Moro, Charles (Linda) Hayes of Troy, Illinois, Lisa (Kenny) Simpkins of Lick Creek, Illinois, Nikki (Kevin) Grieshaber of Monument, Colorado; his mother and step father, Florence and Wayne Pierce of Litchfield; 7 grandchildren, Bill (Sierra) Voyles, Charlie (Amber) Hayes, Stephanie (Kevin) Morris, Erin Miller, Courtney (Robbie) Allen, Nick Grieshaber, Lindsay Grieshaber; and nine great grandchildren, Austin, Ariel, Gracie, Zoey, Riley, Malcolm, Ethan, Kolten, and Kamron.Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society.An online condolence and guest book may be found at www.eliaskallalandschaaf.com
