Nellie DeVerger

Fieldon |

Nellie Marie DeVerger, 92, died at 11:40 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at her home in Fieldon, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born on November 10, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan and was the daughter of Claude Leroy and Jessie Stella (Tucker) Cope.

She married the love of her life, Judson Carl DeVerger on January 5, 1948 at the Fieldon United Church of Christ. Together, they were blessed with nearly 70 years of marriage, sharing in the joys of raising their 3 children and the blessings that their  grandchildren and great grandchildren brought to them.

She and Judson passed on their love for traveling to their family. Every summer, the family would travel to Colorado and they fell in love with the mountains so much that they purchased a cabin near Buena Vista, a family gathering place that continues to be enjoyed even over 40 years later.

She enjoyed spending time fishing with her aunt and best friend, Eva Mae Tucker, and was a longtime and faithful member of the Hardin Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher.

Nellie was a caregiver by nature, and the matriarch of the family that everyone looked up to. She took great pride in her appearance and strived to do everything with careful consideration and the utmost attention to detail. She was an amazing homemaker, who made it her mission to take care of everyone and everything, and made sure that no one ever left her home hungry. Most of all, she loved her husband and her family, and took great joy in watching her children and grandchildren grow.

Surviving are a son and daughter in-law, Rick and Mary DeVerger of Fieldon; two daughters and a son in-law, Debbie DeVerger of Grafton and Lisa and Roger Snider of Fieldon; four grandchildren, Brian (Marcia) DeVerger of Fieldon, Darin DeVerger (April Loy) of Jerseyville, Brandyn Snider (Stephanie West) of Springfield and Adrienne (Brandt) Seward of Seattle, Washington;  three step grandchildren, Trenton Griffith, Angel Kunkel and Cassidy Yates; two great grandchildren, Christian and Kyah DeVerger; as well as a sister, Doris Jean Phillips of Jerseyville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Judson, on November 17, 2017; two sisters, Dollie McFarland and Reathel Plieman; as well as three brothers, Keith, Leroy and Forest Cope.

Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 p.m., Monday, March 11, 2024 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday.

Burial will follow at Fieldon Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to Hardin Presbyterian Church, in care of the funeral home.
