N. Weinrich

N. Gail Weinrich, a civic and community leader whose business career spanned more than 40 years, passed away Thursday evening, March 1, 2018 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was 88.

Mr. Weinrich, an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, was a longtime member and elder at College Avenue Presbyterian Church and more recently, a member and volunteer at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey.  Following his retirement from McDonnell-Douglas in 1993, he became active with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), where he was a past district director. He was past president of Alton-Godfrey Rotary and current treasurer of the North Alton-Godfrey Business Council.

He worked for Laclede Steel from 1950 to 1982, eventually attaining the position of manager of management services before joining McDonnell-Douglas in 1983.  At the time of his retirement from the St. Louis aircraft company, he was director of general services.

Born in Dallas, TX, Nov. 23, 1929, Gail was the son of Leo and Verna Weinrich of Alton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Kent and Duane Weinrich, and a sister, Ilota Trail.

He was a graduate of Alton Senior High School, attended Missouri School of Mines at Rolla and graduated from Washington University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. In 1966, he completed an executive management program at Harvard University’s School of Business.

A cherished husband, father, grandfather and friend, he loved travel, music, reading, sports and spending time with family. He and his wife of 66 years, I. June Nickell Weinrich, married in Alton on Aug. 25, 1951.  She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters: Cathy (Bill) Smith of University City, MO, Janet (Brent) Paterson of Bloomington, IL and Carol (Jim) Helsel of Lemoyne, PA. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Megan Paterson of College Station, TX and Heather Paterson, a student at Illinois State University in Normal.

Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at the church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Evangelical UCC, Make-A-Wish Foundation or Ronald McDonald House Charities.
