Monica Murphy

Monica M. Murphy, 81, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 4:48 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehab. 

Born December 29, 1937 in Machens, MO, she was the daughter of William and Frances (Wardein) Roderfeld.  She was a graduate of Jerseyville High School and a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. 

She was a nurses’ aide for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton and retired in 1998 from OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center where she had worked as a nurses’ aide and office manager in the Home Health Care Department. 

On July 20, 1957 she married Donald Murphy at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey.  He preceded her in death on October 21, 1997. 

Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Godfrey of Godfrey, Julia Godfrey (Anthony) of Godfrey, and Christine Brown (Matthew) of Godfrey, one son, Mark Murphy (Amie) of Overland Park, KS, seven grandchildren, Ryan Godfrey, Lauren and Justin Godfrey, Nathan, Natalie and Evan Brown, and Caroline Murphy, one brother, Alvin Roderfeld of Alton, two sisters, Delores Tallman of Houston, TX, and Willetta Lundahl of Alton, and a special friend and devoted companion, Herbert “Red” McVey of Alton. 

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Art and Glennon Roderfeld and a sister, Marian Murphy. 

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2019 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. 

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:00 noon Saturday, February 2, 2019 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey.  Father Steven Janoski will officiate. 

Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. 

Memorials may be made to St. Ambrose School or Marquette Catholic High School.
