Mildred Alben

Mildred M. Alben, 94, of Bethalto, passed away at 10:21 am on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Eunice Smith Home in Alton.

She was born on April 20, 1922, in Alton, the daughter of Edward and Lovie (Kraushar) Westfall.

Mildred worked for several different factories in Alton, for 10 years including Glass Works, LaClede Steel, and Olin Corp. She then worked for the next 15 years and the Honkey Variety Store and Bickhouse Sporting Goods.

She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and a former member of St. Mary’s and St. Kevin’s Catholic Church. She helped for many years at St. Kevin’s in different parts of the church. She was involved with the Wood River Sportsmen Club and Jerseyville Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included crocheting and waxing cars.

Mildred married Joseph Alben on November 11, 1944, at Cherry Street Baptist Church and later remarried in the Catholic Church at St. Mary’s in Alton. He preceded her in death in 2000.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Russell and Lois Thompson of Rosewood Heights; three grandchildren and their spouses, Terri and Mike Harvey of Alton, Melanie and Dave Moore of Alton, Lesley and Alan Kolesa of Troy; six great grandchildren, Nicholas, Whitney, Alexis, Jenna, Tyler, Lily; four great-great grandchildren, Logan, Kelsie, Corbin, Olivia; and one brother Walter Westfall of Pearl, IL.

In addition to her husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 am until time of service at 1 pm, Friday, September 9, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Fr. Tom Leibler officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be given to Masses, or Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
