Michael Richard Hartnett, Sr., 73, passed away 6:36 a.m., Sunday, September 17, 2017 at OSF St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton

Born in Alton on March 20, 1944, he was the son of William Patric and Maxine Louise (Brickey) Hartnett.

He had been a mechanic for Watts Waste Services before retiring.

An avid NASCAR fan, he enjoyed racing of all forms and driving at Tri-City and Godfrey Race Tracks. His biggest joy was being able to watch his grandchildren grow up and spend time with them.

He married Kim Richardson, who survives.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Richard (Lori) Hartnett, Jr. of East Alton, Matthew R. Sr., (Sheila) Hartnett of Edwardsville; step-son, Jazz Richardson of South Roxana; two daughters, Michelle R. (her companion, Alan Toppmeyer) of Wood River, Melissa (Bart) Magruder of South Roxana; step daughter, Kelley Richardson of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren, Emily and Bethany Hartnett, Matthew Jr. and Marcus Hartnett; Jarred, Joshua, Jessica and Jacob Levan, Maddie and Mazie Magruder; sister, Phyllis Yingst of Escondido, CA; two aunts, Mary Lou Worsham and Lorraine Cobeck; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Memorial visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 19, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
