Michael James Edel, 84, passed away on February 24, 2024, at his home.
Born July 30, 1939, in Breese, IL, he was the son of Melvin and Jane (Thompson) Edel.
Michael earned his Bachelor's Degree from Illinois State University and then his Master's Degree from SIU-E. He began teaching and coaching, basketball and golf, in the Beecher School District before moving to teach and coach in the East Alton-Wood River District before retiring in 1993. Following that he followed his love of coin collecting that he learned from his father while living in Centralia, and opened MJ Edel Coins in Wood River. An avid golfer, he has had seven witnessed holes-in-one.
On August 17, 1963, in Shattuc, IL, he married Margie K. Stein. She survives.
Surviving also are his children, Michael C. Edel of Wood River, Minna (James) Holloway of Allen, TX, Melissa (Travis)) Appelhans of Grand Lake, CO; five grandchildren, Michael T. (Janie) Edel, Lily, Jamie, and Anthony Holloway, Trustin Appelhans; a great-granddaughter, Ellie Edel; and sister, Marian (Steve) Dowdy of Wood River.
Memorial visitation will be held from 10 am until the time of service at 11 am, Tuesday, March 12 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
Private interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Centralia.
