Michael L. Barton, PHD, 86, died Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at his home in Godfrey. Born September 12, 1937 in Olney, IL, he was the son of James and Frieda (Smith) Barton. He served in the U.S. Army and retired January 1997 as Chief of Psychology at the VA Medical Center in St. Louis, MO. On February 13, 1960 he married Wanda “Gerri” Skaggs in St. Louis, MO. She survives. Michael was a private pilot and passionate about flying. He was a member of the Columbia Flying Club in Columbia, IL. He also enjoyed motorcycles and convertibles. Along with his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kimberly (David Overland) Barton of St. Louis, MO, a son, Mike (Lisa) Barton of Elsah, IL, three grandchildren, Alexis (Tommy) Gaither, Taylor (Alec) Kuhn, and Abby Barton, a great grandchild, Theodore Kuhn, one brother, Bill (Bea) Drinnin, one sister, Debra Carr, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well as a special friend and caregiver, Jennifer Gottlob. Graveside services will be private at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Unity Church, 4753 Butler Hill Road, St. Louis, MO 63128. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
