Mercedes Hawkins

Mercedes Sophie Hawkins, nee Reeb, 85, of Swansea, IL, born November 9, 1939, died Saturday, July 26, 2025, at St. Paul’s Senior Community, Belleville, IL.

Mercedes was the youngest of her siblings, growing up in Belleville and attending St. Theresa’s School and Belleville Township High School. She was a bank teller, married and made a good home for her growing family, wherever her husband’s career took them, finally returning to hometown Belleville. Aside from pride in her kids, Mercedes’ interests included medical journals, gardening, bird watching, scrapbooking, genealogy, her dogs, and bowling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Cora, nee Harpstreit, Reeb; a brother, Arthur Reeb; three sisters, Juanita Zelenka, Patricia Phillips, and Marlene Reeb; and a son-in-law, Carl Walker.

Surviving are her husband, Earl G. Hawkins; a son, Stephen Hawkins; a daughter, Stacey Hawkins; and two grandchildren, Reilly Hawkins and Ashley Walker.

Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL.

Funeral: Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, with Fr. Joseph Oganda officiating.

Burial will be at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
