Maxwell Forbes

Maxwell McLuckie Forbes, 82, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 7:15 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016 at his home.  Born April 28, 1934 in Mt. Olive, Illinois, the son of the late Alexander and Helen (Brown) Forbes.  He married the love of his life, Marlene Rae (Lagemann) Forbes on November 12, 1960 in Alton and she passed away on April 29, 2015.  He retired from the Granite City School District in 1989 after 30 years of dedicated service as a High School vocational electricity teacher and had also retired in 2000 from American Steel after 10 years of service.  The United States Army veteran was also a 35 year member of the IBEW Local 309.  He was a dedicated and faithful member of the Nameoki United Methodist Church in Granite City.  Max had served as a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts Troop #5 and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.  He served Granite City as a Precinct Committeeman and as an electrical inspector.  Max enjoyed his days farming, scrapping, gardening, bee keeping and tending to his blue birds.  He also was known for his landmark “Kilroy was Here” sign on his farm along Highway 55. Other notable traits included taking time to visit, helping others and serving as a mentor and friend to many throughout his life.  Max will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.  He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Yan Forbes of Bunker Hill and Brian and Michelle Forbes of Granite City; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Jeremy Weaver of Granite City; four loving grandchildren, Maxwell Forbes, Alexander Weaver, Anna Rose Forbes and Elizabeth Rose Weaver; one sister, Margaret Laudel of Mehlville, Missouri; many special caregivers; other extended family and friends.  In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Isabella Forbes.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Memorial services will be held at Nameoki United Methodist Church, 1900 Pontoon Road in Granite City on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Tim Pate officiating.  Memorials may be made to Nameoki United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association and may be accepted at the funeral home.  www.irwinchapel.com
