Maurice Simmons

Maurice “Moe” R. Simmons, 69, passed away after a short battle with brain cancer at 5:55 pm on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton with his family by his side.

He was born October 17, 1943 in Wood River, IL, the son of Rolla O. and Margaret (Barr) Simmons.   

He married Barbara Landreth on March 9, 1962 in St. Clair County. She survives.

Moe was a retired teamster working for Colonial Bread Company and Dolly Madison.  He served as a business agent for Teamsters Local 525.  After retirement Moe enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing Texas Hold’em, casino gambling and watching Cardinals Baseball and Blue’s Hockey, he also volunteered for Senior Services Plus in Alton as a chauffeur.  Moe was loved so much by his family and friends.  They enjoyed having fun with him and admired him greatly.  He made a lasting impression on everyone he met.   

 

He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 51 years, Barbie; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Simmons of Godfrey; a daughter-in-law, Rixene Simmons of Alton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dallas and Bonnie Simmons of Kentucky and Kenny and Denise Simmons of Missouri; a sister, Sharon Howard of Alton; an aunt, Betty Geiger of Alton;  two brothers-in-law and their wives, Jack and Judy Landreth of Bethalto and Gary and Diane Liley of Bethalto; a sister-in-law and her husband, LaJeanne and Homer Salzman of PA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends..

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Scott Simmons, who died unexpectedly 360 days ago, an infant brother, Roger and brother-in-law, Don Howard and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Liley,

Visitation will be from 4 until services at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Charles West officiating.

Memorials may be made to Rosewood Care Center of Alton Rehabilitation Department.
