Matthew S. Napoli, 85, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wood River on January 19, 1931, he was the son of John and Caterina (Italia) Napoli.

A Marine Corp veteran of the Korean War, he worked as a furnace builder for Olin Brass for 36 years before retiring in 1986.  He then worked for the City of Wood River for 18 additional years.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Matt enjoyed mushroom hunting and wine making.  He was a member of Wood River Moose Lodge #1349, East Alton American Legion Post #794 and Holy Angels Parish.

Surviving are a daughter, Pamela (Charlie) Conrad of Roodhouse; eight grandchildren, Dustene (Peter) Shoemaker, Trinity (Jeremy) Kelley, Diana Austin, Matthew (Tiffany) Hamby, Aaron (Emilee) Napoli, Sarah Napoli, Emily (Brad) Lewther, Alex (Raquel) Napoli; 15 great grandchildren, Stormie, Gideon John, Selena and Antonio Shoemaker, Angel and Anika Galbraith, Landon Warner, David Whitehead, Emily and Katelynn Hamby, Olivia Napoli, Kaitlynn and James Napoli, Parker Collins and Waylon Napoli; sister, Margaret Napoli of Wood River; daughter-in-law, Lisa Napoli of Potosi, MO; and long-time companion, Mary Buchanan of Wood River.

Preceding in death were his parents; son, John Matthew Napoli; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Rick Austin;and two sisters, Sarah Napoli and Maria Robertson.

A Prayer Service will begin at 3:45 followed by a visitation until 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Angels Parish Church in Wood River.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Angels Church.  Father Donald Wolford will officiate.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Alton with military honors presented by Alton V.F. W. Post #1308.

Memorials may be made to masses or a charity of one's choice.
