Mary Fricke

Bethalto |

Mary “Teddy” Fricke, 99, of Bethalto, passed away at 7:05 pm on June 23, 2018, at Jerseyville Community Hospital.

She was born November 21, 1918 in Springfield Illinois, to Lynne and Ella (Hopkins) Clemmons.  She married Wilbert Fricke on January 28, 1946 in Ann Arbor Michigan, who preceded her in death on November 22, 1987.

Mary served with the Foster Grandparent Program through Senior Services Plus. As a foster grandparent, she helped teachers and students in the Bethalto School District for 20 years. Mary also worked for many years at the Bethalto Library helping with their reading program and making bookmarks from donated cards until she was 98. In addition to being a wife, mother, and homemaker, she worked 25 years in the records department for Newhard Cook & Company in downtown St. Louis.  Mary was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto.

Mary, known to many as Teddy, lived to help others, spend time with her family and friends, laughing, having a good time and enjoying life.  When asked for her secret to a happy life she would reply, “Laugh a lot and enjoy wine!”

Mary is survived by a daughter, Jan Beck (Mike) of Bethalto, IL; a son, Ron Fricke (Kay) of Richmond, VA; 6 grandchildren, Megan Carter (Scott), Lyndsey Valin (Jack), Amber Heavner, Rachel Hagen (Scott), Kyle Fricke (Brooke), and Davis Beck; 4 great grandchildren; Evan, Bodhi, Penelope, and Maddox.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, cherished relatives, and close friends.

Vistation will be held from 10 am until time of service at 11 am on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, with Pastor Kale Hansen officiating.  A private burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Collinsville, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Bethalto Library or the Foster Grandparent Program through Senior Services Plus in Alton.
