Mary Etta Spalding, 88, of Bethalto, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
She was born on March 26, 1938, in Nashville, IL, the daughter of James A. and Evelyn R. (Smith) Hodge. In August of 1955, Mary married Lewis L. Dreith, and remained married for 33 years. She later married Wilbur G. Spalding in October of 1990. They were married for 25 years before his passing on August 27, 2014.
Mary is a 1956 graduate of Civic Memorial High School. She later worked for 10 years in the Bethalto School District as a cook. Mary was a member of Cornerstone Church in Bethalto. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Barb (Bill) Watson of Bethalto; grandchildren, Michael (Meagan) Watson, Sam Watson, Scott (Geni)Watson, Andrew (Alicia) Dreith, Doug (Katie) Dreith, and Alex (Chloe) Dreith; and great-grandchildren, Lynn, William, Oliver, Wilbur, Carson, Cam, Wyatt, Dempsey, Millie, and Rory.
Along with her parents, and first husband, Lewis who passed in June of 2016, and second husband, Wilbur, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Dreith; and a brother, Jim Hodge.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 11 am, at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Pastor Kermit Barker will officiate. Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home is assisting the family with final arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Cornerstone Church in Bethalto.
