Mary Ann (Banghart) Powell Sinclair, 92, passed away at 6:30 a.m., Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Jerseyville Manor.
She was born on June 23, 1934, in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Joseph and Lenore (Breden) Banghart. Raised in Calhoun County, Mary Ann graduated from Hardin High School and remained proud of the roots and values instilled in her there throughout her life.
She married William Louis Powell on August 2, 1952, in Hardin, and together they built a life centered around their family, becoming the parents of eight children. With a large and busy household to care for, Mary Ann devoted much of her younger years to raising her family. A talented seamstress, she worked from her home during those years, putting her skills to use while still being present for the everyday moments of family life. William preceded her in death on February 1, 1990.
Mary Ann later married Harry Sinclair on February 16, 1996, in Jerseyville, and they shared eight years together prior to his death on February 26, 2004.
Once her children were raised, Mary Ann began working at Rudolph's Department Store in Jerseyville, where she was employed for many years. She also had a heart for giving back to others and generously volunteered her time at Jersey Community Hospital.
Faith was a constant throughout Mary Ann's life. She was a longtime and faithful member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, where she found both a church home and a community that remained important to her through the years.
Mary Ann was happiest with the simple comforts of home and family. She took great pride in tending to her flower garden and enjoyed watching the birds that gathered outside.. But more than anything, her life was rooted in the family she worked so hard to raise and care for. From eight children came generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating a family that became one of the greatest and most lasting parts of her life.
She is survived by seven children, Kenneth (Dawn) Powell of Alton, Mark (Debra) Powell of Greenfield, Cathy (William) Davidson of Jerseyville, Jeri Karrick of Jerseyville, Peggy Fudge of Jerseyville, Alan (Debbie) Powell of Jerseyville and Richard Powell of Jerseyville; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, William Powell and Harry Sinclair, she was preceded in death by an infant son, James Stephen Powell; two brothers, Robert Banghart and James Banghart, who died in infancy; and a son-in-law, Steven Karrick.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Burial will follow at St. Norbert's Cemetery in Hardin.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School, in care of Crawford Funeral Home.
