Mary Powell

Mary Powell, 84, of Cottage Hills, IL passed away at 6:25 p.m. Sat. Feb. 17, 2024 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

She was born May 20, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Neil & Mary (Hanley) McLaughlin. 

She and Floyd Powell were united in marriage July 18, 1959 in New York.  He preceded her in death Jun. 1, 1978. 

Mary retired as a supervisor from Angelica Image Apparel Uniform Co.  She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, where she was a member of Community 55 and helped with frequent funeral luncheons.  Mary loved her family and was always there and helpful with anything that involved family.  She was a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi, holding the president, vice president and secretarial positions.  She also belonged to DCCW (Diocesan Council of Catholic Women) and enjoyed going to their yearly conventions held at various cities in the Springfield Diocese.  She was also a board member with the Catholic Children’s Home in Alton and helped with their fundraisers.  She loved reading and was in a book club whose many selected readings became good movies.

Her survivors include 4 daughters: Kathleen Powell of Huron, SD, Peggy (John) Dugger of Bethalto, IL, Mary (John) Terry also of Bethalto and Kelly (Nathan) Graham of Ballwin, MO; sons: Dan (Marta) Powell of Ballwin, MO and Matthew Powell of Arnold, MO; 13 grandchildren: Ian (Venetia) Taylor, Bridget (Josh) Carr, Megan (Kasey) Govero, Molly (Mark) Grelle, Mallory (Ryan) Fechte, Michael (Carson Stewart) Carter, Seth (Mady) Terry, Kyle Terry, Julia Powell, Ariana Powell, Brady (Tiffany) Dugger, Ryan (Kacy Dunham) Dugger and Mallory (Joey) Lisch; 16 great-grandchildren: Kinley and Hailey Govero, Noah and Avery Carr, Ivy and Georgia Grelle, Kaytlynn DiDomenico, Peter and Penelope Fechte, Evan Dugger, Bella Dugger, Brenna Dugger, Ellie Dugger, Addi Dugger, Anderson Lisch, Leo Lisch and Navy Dugger; a sister: Eileen (Frank) Savacool of NC; sister-in-law: Delores (Dale) Rose of Bethalto, IL; brother-in-law: Carroll (Sharon) Powell of Bethalto, IL.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death a son: Michael Powell; 2 brothers: Fr. Charles McLaughlin and John McLaughlin; and a son-in-law: Peter Krpan.

Memorial donations may be made to ALS or the American Heart Association.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wed. Feb. 21, 2023 at Paynic Home for Funerals.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thurs. Feb. 22, 2024 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Liebler as Celebrant.  Burial will follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens.
