Mary Metzger-Harris

Mary J. Metzger-Harris, 84, of Clayton, Missouri, passed away at 4:15 am on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Fairmont of Clayton.

Born on July 8, 1940, in Alton, Illinois, she was the daughter of George Wesley and Lola Grace (Morgan) Swan. Mary married Donald Metzger on October 17, 1959, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Brighton and he preceded her in death on December 30, 1999. She married Dr. Delbert Harris on July 20, 2002 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Brighton and he preceded her in death on January 27, 2021.

Mary was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of East Alton, IL and the First United Methodist Church of Lebanon, IL. She attended Lewis and Clark Community College, earning her Associate’s Degree and she worked as a library cataloger for the Alton School District and was passionate about reading. An avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and she also enjoyed watching basketball games at McKendree College. She volunteered at the Kings Closet in Lebanon, IL, and had a keen eye for sewing and she loved cats. Earlier in her life, she worked at Owen’s Illinois as a glass bottle washer.

Mary is survived by her two sons, Michael G. (Carol) Metzger of Davenport, Iowa, and Daniel G. Metzger of Bethalto, Illinois; one grandson, Isaac (Ashley) Hopkins of Caseyville, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Callen Hopkins and Kodi Hopkins; one sister, Rebecca (Robert "Bob") Jones of Glen Carbon, Illinois; one brother, David (Cindy) Swan of Centralia, Washington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Swan.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 p.m. at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey and will continue from 10 a.m. until the funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday December 27, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church in East Alton, IL with Rev. Ed Granadosin officiating.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to Vitas Hospice or the First United Methodist Church of East Alton.
