Mary Lavina (Vinny) Nickels, 96, went to be with our Lord at 4:35p.m. on Monday, July 23, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born on September 10, 1921 in Jersey County. She was a Gold Star Mother of the Vietnam War. During her life she worked at Olin, was a short order cook at the White Spot Café and worked at Walker/Graham’s 5 and Dime. She was a member of the American Legion and VFW, the Wood River Moose and the Otterville Southern Baptist Church, but above all she was a homemaker, as family always came first.
She married Leslie Elvin Nickels on September 21, 1939 in St. Charles, MO. Together they raised six children: Gerald (Carla) Nickels of Bourbon, MO. and Anita Nickels of Jerseyville, IL. She was preceded in death by her son: Leslie David (Mary Jane-living) Nickels and daughters: Barbara Ontis, Janet Sue (Carl) Freand and Martha (Ed) Hayes.
She loved having and spending time with her eleven grandchildren, Carla Norris, Karen Freand, Crystal (Jerry) King, Robert (Linda) Ontis, Patrick (Cathy) Nickels, Dawn (Mark) Ansell, Jeffery (Susan) Freand, Melissa Ontis, Leslie Freand, and Amanda (Paul) Koch; her eleven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents: Levit Fryman and Daisy Mae (Miles) Fryman; her brothers and sisters: Lelia Chamineak, Leslie Fryman, Rosa Webster, Wesley Fryman, and Lucille Fryman; one granddaughter, one great-grandson, and one great-great-granddaughter.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 4-8:00p.m. at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. There will be a funeral the following day on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 10:00am at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with Pastor David Brown officiating. Mary will be laid to rest at Vahalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
The family asks that memorials be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
