Mary Hartman

Mary "Robin" J. Scott Hartman, 83, passed away on November 9, 2025, in St. Louis, MO.

She was born on May 16, 1942, to Jane Mahoney Scott and Robert O’Neill Scott in Alton, IL. She married William Hartman on May 15, 1965, at St. Patrick’s Church in Alton, IL.

Robin and Bill had three children: Patrick Hartman, Julie Theobald (John), and Kevin Hartman (Katie). Robin had two sisters: Valerie Scott Brown and Martha Scott Maloy. She was a devoted grandmother (Gaga) to eight grandchildren: Ryan, Brendan, Caitlin and Bridget Hartman and Emily (Gill), Erin, Shannon and Sean Theobald. She also had two great grandchildren, Harrison and Kit Gill. She also had six nieces and nephews as well as many dear cousins.

During Robin and Bill’s 60-year marriage, Bill’s employer, Owen’s Illinois Glass Co., moved them frequently both within the United States as well as abroad to Italy, Australia and Malaysia. Wherever they lived, Robin always created a safe and nurturing environment for her family. During these moves, she enjoyed traveling throughout Europe with her family, and was thrilled to visit the Vatican and attend a mass with Pope John Paul II.  They moved back to their Alton/Godfrey roots following the birth of their first grandchild in 1993.

Robin enjoyed her family, Notre Dame football, the St. Louis Cardinals, and spending time with her friends. Ever the devoted grandmother, her grandchildren were always excited to play games of all kinds with Gaga. She kept active with various activities including crafting, knitting, scrabble, bridge, dominoes, as well as hand and foot. She was especially proud of her 100% Irish heritage and of all things Ireland. Her love of shamrocks, leprechauns and all things green was apparent throughout her home and wardrobe! During one of her many trips to Ireland (she kept a running list with a total of 17), she and her sister Martha worked on a family tree which they turned into a beautiful book for their families. She was also a past president of the Ladies Ancient order of Hibernians, Jane Mahoney Scott Division, named after her mother.

Her parents, sister Valerie Scott Brown, and brother-in-law Dr. James Brown preceded her in death.

A Catholic funeral mass will be celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, November 22nd at 11:00 am. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

A private burial will take place for family only.
