Mary Chapman

Mary Rilla Chapman, 92, of rural Greenfield, died Saturday, September 12 at her home.  She was born on the family farm in Greene County to Elmer Robert and Mary Helen (Linker) Cunningham. She married her high school sweetheart John Arthur Chapman in 1952, and they shared nearly 65 years of marriage before his death in 2017.

Mary loved nature, gardening, and animals, especially dogs.  She was an excellent cook and could create magic with her sewing machine. In 1964, the family moved to Nebraska eventually settling in Wahoo where they spent 40 years. While there, she was active in the local Presbyterian church, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and 4H. She proudly served more than 30 years as an election official.  In 2004, Mary and John returned to Illinois where they built their dream retirement farm.

She leaves behind a daughter Julie Chapman, of Carlinville, a son Andrew (Donaday) of Fresno, CA. and a granddaughter, Camille Chapman in Los Angeles.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 16, at 11 am at Grace Methodist Church in Greenfield. Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service at the church.  Burial will follow at Hickory Cemetery near Wrights. Memorials are suggested to the American Kidney Fund or Macoupin County Animal Control. Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield is assisting the family.
