Marvin Hilligoss

Marvin Vern "Sarge" Hilligoss, 76, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015 at OSF St. Anthony Hospital in Alton.

Born in St. Louis on June 8, 1939, he was the son of the late Vern Hilligoss and Zelma (Harrison) and Floyd Porter.

He had worked on the Assembly Line for the Ford Motor Company before he retired.

A U.S. Marine veteran, serving from 1958-62. He was a member of East Alton American Legion Post 794; serving as Sgt.-at-Arms and and had been Post Commander. 

Marvin was active in Civil War re-enactments, spent many years as "Commandant" of the Ft. de Chartres Site in Prairie Du Rocher as a French Colonel; traveled with the Tippecanoe Ancient Fife and Drum Corps to many events including, Mardi Gras and France.  He enjoyed the Renaissance Fair, portraying a Swiss Guard, and was an extra in the movie, "North and South".

Ha married the former Donna Slaughter on April 29, 1967 in Wood River.  She survives.

Surviving also are a niece, Stephanie Walters (David Williams); great niece and nephew, Cory and Amber Walters; brother, Russell Porter of Baden, MO.

Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.

Private services will be Wednesday followed by burial in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

The Marine Corps "Toys For Tots" campaign had been named a memorial.
