Martin Schultz

Wood River |

Martin Arthur Schultz was called to his eternal rest Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the age of 55.

He was born March 9, 1962, the son of the Rev. Donald Schultz and Mary (nee Stephan) Schultz in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

He entered the Kingdom of God through Holy Baptism on March 25, 1962 at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, St. Vital, Manitoba, Canada.

On June 10, 1983, he was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Gartman. We rejoice in the 33 years of marriage that Martin and Ruth shared together. God has richly blessed them with love and faithfulness.

The Lord also blessed this family with the gifts of four children, Rev. John (Sarah) Schultz of Plymouth, WI, Rev. David (Jenna) Schultz of Fort Wayne, IN, Jacob (Rebecca) Schultz of Wood River, IL and Marie Schultz of Wood River, IL.

The Lord has further blessed this union with the gifts of five grandchildren: Miriam, Rebecca, Leah, Luke, and Isaiah Schultz and a sixth grandchild expected in December 2017.

Other survivors include his mother Mary Schultz, siblings Rachel (George) Denholm, Jonathan (Susan) Schultz, Joel (Amy) Schultz, Jeremy (Michelle) Schultz, along with many other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Rev. Donald Schultz.

Following graduation in May of 1988 from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, he was called to be pastor at Trinity Lutheran in Danville, IL. Ordination occurred on June 6, 1988 in Red Bud, IL. On December 1, 1991, he was installed as pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River, Illinois where he served until his death. We give thanks for the 25 years of faithful service to the Lord and His people gathered at St. Paul. He was a devoted husband, father, papa, pastor and friend.

As pastor, he had the joy of serving the Church at Large on Boards of Synod, District and Circuit, Metro East Lutheran High School, as Circuit Visitor and as vacancy pastor at Concordia Lutheran Church, Cottage Hills, IL.

Visitation will be Monday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River. Funeral Service will be Tuesday at 10:00 AM at the church. Following the service, his body will be laid to rest at the Roselawn Cemetery in Bethalto to await the day when our Lord shall call him forth at the sound of the trumpet to Himself in heaven.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River, IL.
