Martha Jean Combes, 90, passed away at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, at Bethalto Care Center in Bethalto.

She was born in Witt, Illinois on September 2, 1926 to Donald and Hazel (Hefley) Lindsay. Martha was the oldest of five children. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Donna Lou Lindsay and her brother Walter Lindsay.

On June 29, 1957 Martha married Roy W. “Bill” Combes at Landsdowne Church of Christ in East St. Louis, IL.

Martha worked at various credit unions, but most of her life at Swift Credit Union in Belleville, IL and was treasurer and eventually President of the Illinois Chapter. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Christian Old People’s Home in St. Louis. She had been a Faithful member of First Christian Church of Bethalto. She retired in January 1992. In her late years she worked as a cook for Collinsville school district.

Martha is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Patrick Heston of Moro, IL, one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Debbie Combes of Bethalto, six grandchildren and their spouses: Ryan and Vicki Heston, Shannon and Sarah Heston, Lindsay Heston; Lori and Brad Hasquin, Scott and Shanna Combes, Jenni and Josh Hunt, as well as 13 great grandchildren: Taylor, Caden, Carter, Ember, Brody, Hadley, Jocelyn, Avari, Ryleigh, Kinsley, Gibson, Madelyn, and Maddux. She is also survived by her sister Sherran, Mrs. Richard Battas of Fairview Heights, a brother,  Donald Lindsay of Alton, and a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Lindsay, Mrs. Walter Lindsay of O’Fallon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Funeral service will be at 10 am on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Elias, Kallal, & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Pat Heston officiating.

Burial will be at Lake View Memory Gardens in Fairview Heights, IL.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Association.
