Marie (Lacout) Zakrzewski, 100, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at her home.
She was born Dec. 10, 1924 in Collinsville, IL to Alex “Frenchy” and Maria Lacout. She married Edward Zakrzewski on Aug. 12, 1944. He preceded her in death.
She grew up in Wood River, IL where her father owned a tavern named Frenchy’s, later the SoHo Tavern. She and her sister worked there, alongside their father. During World War II she worked at Olin, helping with the war efforts. She raised four children with her husband on their farm in Bethalto. She worked hard all her life and was never idle. She loved to cook and bake for her family. She was an excellent card player and hosted many card club gatherings at her home. She was a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan and watched every game.
She is survived by two daughters, one son, two daughters-in-law, and one son-in-law, Bea & Bruce Hamilton, of Salem, SC, Marie Lehnen of Moro, Stan & Kathi Zakrzewski of Alton, IL and Dee Zakrzewski of Bethalto, IL; 9 grandchildren and their spouses, Matt & Kim Lehnen, Brett & Jessica Hamilton, Connie & Joni Duikete, Brian & Carna Hamilton, Anna Zakrzewski, Shannon & Tony Aljets, Brad & Cara Zakrzewski, Joe & Kim Zakrzewski, and Nick Zakrzewski; 15 great-grandchildren, Mary, Brittany, Zack, Charlie, Will, Evan, Oliver, Connor, Isabel, Leo, Greta, Alaina, Jay, Maya, and Eli.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Zakrzewski; a sister, Celina Gildersleeve; and a son-in-law, Mike Lehnen.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 19 at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton from 10 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow at Woodland Hill Cemetery in Wood River.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to BJC Hospice.
