Marian Burns

Marian C. Burns, 96, of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away at 12:28 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville. 

She was born January 9, 1922 in Portage Des Sioux, Missouri, a daughter of the late Henry and Cora (Dames) Bextermueller.  She married Vincent B. Burns on April 3, 1943 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in West Alton, Missouri and he passed away on November 4, 1984. 

She retired from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville after 17 years of dedicated service as the manager of the cash office.  She was a faithful member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon.  She had served her country working in factories during World War II, this being known as “Rosie the Riveter” and had worked at Curtiss Wright Manufacturing in St. Louis. 

She was a talented as a seamstress and upholstery worker.  She enjoyed home remodeling, playing the organ, camping and boating.  She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and cherished her family. 

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Bonnie Burns of Edwardsville and Beth and Dale Landolt of Pocahontas; a son and daughter-in-law, Benny and Sharon Burns of Glen Carbon; five grandchildren and their spouses, Becky Swafford, Kenny Burns, Matt and Iris Miller, Renae and Jeremy Kenny and Derek and Erica Landolt; six great grandchildren, Randall Sturdevant, Kaitlin Miller, Aubree Miller, Colin Kenny, Donovan Kenny and Catherine Landolt; two sisters-in-law, Leona Bextermueller and Margaret Burns; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Bill Burns; a great granddaughter, Sara Podwolsky; five brothers, Adolph, Henry, Bernard, Eugene and Lawrence Bextermueller and eights sisters, Bertha Bextermueller, Gertrude Orf, Margaret Gusnard, Bernadine Dunsford, Corrine Fehlig, Sister Joanella Bextermueller, SSND, Helen Walsh and Cleo Maher; sister-in-law, Inez “Curly” Bextermueller and a brother-in-law, Dave Maher.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon on Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. with Father Patrick Gibbons as celebrant. 

Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. 

Memorials may be made as masses or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
