Marguerite Hufker

Marguerite L. (Elliott) Hufker, age 103, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 26, 2025, at Cedarhurst of Bethalto.

She was born on March 16, 1922, in Moro, Illinois, and was a lifelong resident of Moro, where she made her home for nearly her entire life, before moving to Cedarhurst of Bethalto in April of 2025. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur J. and Minnie K. (Hinrichs) Elliott. Marguerite attended Alton Senior High School and was a member of the Class of 1940.

On August 20, 1949, she married Bernard H. Hufker at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto. He preceded her in death on September 12, 1998.

Marguerite was employed by Western Cartridge Company in the payroll department from 1940 until 1954. In 1972, she became the office manager at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, where she worked for 12 years before retiring in 1984.

She was a devoted member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto, where she shared her love of music as a member of the adult and the Resurrection choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound, and was an active member of St. Ann’s Society. Marguerite was also the past president of the Moro Woman’s Club and a member of the TOPS Club.

Marguerite was a devoted wife and mother and a loving caretaker to her husband in his later years. She loved needlework and was a very talented seamstress, enjoyed playing the piano, and cherished family vacations to Florida and visits with extended family in Colorado, Kansas, Vermont, and northeastern US. In her later years, she found great pleasure in reading and was especially fond of the novels of Jan Karon. Even at Cedarhurst, she continued to care for others-at her dining table she always looked out for her friends, making sure they had what they needed to enjoy their meals. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her two daughters and a son-in-law: Katherine “Kathy” Hufker of Moro, Illinois, and Jayne (Brett) Prior of Manchester, Missouri; five nieces and nephews, Suzanne (Robert) Meyer, Richard (Lynn) Flure, Janet (Rudy) Pugliese, Nancy (Frank) Kopenec, and Diane Bunse-Rizzo; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister and brother-in-law, Loretta (Wilford) Suessen; her parents-in-law, Mary C. and Henry A. Hufker; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lucille (Lee) Flure and Anita (William) Bunse; and her nephew, Alan Bunse, and niece, Elaine Bunse-Bullins (Robert).

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Tom Liebler officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
