Margaret Tucker

Jerseyville |

Margaret Lois (Young) Tucker, 90, died at 10:55 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Jersey Community Hospital.

She was born on June 8, 1927, one of eleven children born to the late Stephen and Mary (Crane) Young.

Margaret was a lifelong resident of Jersey County, and being a part of a large family learned early on the value of hard work and commitment to faith and family.

She began working at age 14, babysitting to help her family make ends meet. She later went on to work at Owens-Illinois Glass Works in Alton, as well as the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville.

She married Alfred N. Tucker on May 18, 1946 in Fieldon, at the age of 18, and together they shared in the pleasure of raising their three sons and were one month shy of celebrating their 39th wedding anniversary before his death on April 18, 1985.

Margaret enjoyed the company of good friends and family. She was a “people person”, always outgoing and friendly. Whether it be at church, a family reunion, playing a good game of Rummy,  or even something as simple as scouring an area yard sale, so long as she was surrounded by people, Margaret was happy.

She was strong in her faith and was baptized at the Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in Jerseyville where she was a member for many years, and had recently started attending services at the Bethlehem Tabernacle in Greenfield.

Above all, Margaret will be remembered for the deep love and admiration she had for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were truly the apple of her eye.

Surviving are three sons and a daughter in-law, Franklin “Frank” Tucker of Batchtown; Kevin and Debbie Tucker of Jerseyville and Alfred S. “Alfie” Tucker of the Philippines; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Tonya and David Stinson of Batchtown; Tobi and Greg Wiles of Jerseyville; Katrina Tucker, and her fiancé Nick Woolsey, of Jerseyville; Elizabeth and James Elmore of Jerseyville; Stephanie and Ricky Bick of Kampsville; Jessica and James Tucker, both of Washington state; and Cheyanne Tucker; eight great-grandchildren, Sidney, Gage, Draken, Eli, Ezekiel, Zander, Eliana and Jace ; 2 sisters, Doris Wedding of Dow and Frances Summers of Jerseyville; and two brothers and a sister in-law, Duane Young of White Hall and Roy & Barb Young of Jerseyville; as well as a dear friend, who Margaret thought of as a son, Lewis “Junior” Blankenship of Florida.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Nelson; a daughter in-law, Kathy Tucker; four brothers, Edgar, Melvin, Elknah and Donald Young; as well as two sisters, Maxine Sweetin and Mary Louise Thaxton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday with the Rev. Robert McAdams officiating.

Burial will take place at the Grimes-Neeley Cemetery in Jerseyville.

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be given to the family in care of Crawford Funeral Home.
