Lorene Cox, fell asleep in the Lord with her family by her side on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

She was born on June 19, 1927 in Bollinger County, MO, daughter of the late, Dewey & Mary “Mamie” (Morlan) Eaker and was the third of nine children.

She married Harold L. Cox on May 4, 1946 in Granite City.  He passed away in 1992.

Lorene was a full time homemaker who loved her sons.  When they started high school she began work as a physical therapist assistant at VIP Manor in Wood River, for several years, retiring to assist her mother.  She became an advocate for the elderly (up through her 70’s) and provided care for many of her elderly community friends.

She was a very active 55-year member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, serving as their first female usher.  She was a member of LWML (Missionary League Ladies Aid) serving at many functions and never missed going to lunch with her lady friends following church services.  She accompanied a church delegation to New Orleans at the age of 79 to assist victims of hurricane Katrina.

Lorene was an avid walker. She was featured in a newspaper article regarding cleaning up litter, around the local middle school.  She was still walking in her late 70’s.  She was also an avid Cardinals baseball fan.

Lorene was a highly energetic positive thinker, an avid gardener and loved to cook for her family.  She returned to Bethalto High School after her son’s were grown to get her GED.  Her country home, which she and her husband custom built, was always alive with her families events.  She was a loving wife mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her four son’s and daughters-in-law, Duane & Ruby Cox of Arnold, MO, Darrell & Sharon Cox of Bethalto, Don & Diane Cox of Bethalto and Dwight & Letty Cox of Tucson AZ; sixteen grandchildren, Traci Cox, Erika Wooldridge, Darren Cox, Brandi Clokey, Mandi Pierce, Angela Deckhard, Christopher Cox, Tara Determan, Kaitlyn Cox, Rodney White, Matt Snell, Jason Snell, Mike Philips, David Philips Daniel Philips and Sean Philips; fifteen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorma & Dale Mueller of Fosterburg, Wilma Jean Bond & Jack Butler of Edwardsville and Lettie & Bill Simmons of Glen Allen, MO and many nieces and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Rayburn, Warren and Darrell Eaker and two sisters, Mary Bessler and Velma Angel.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Monday, April 23, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Visitation will continue from 10 am until time of funeral services at 11 am Tuesday April 24, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto with Rev. Mark Hofferber officiating

Burial will follow at Moro Presbyterian Cemetery in Moro.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran School and or Church
