Lois J. (Schuppan) Podhorn, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Lois was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Helen and Werner Schuppan on May 31, 1948. She graduated from Cleveland High School and became a secretary at Cope Plastics, where she met and married Thomas A. Podhorn. They had two children and shared nearly twenty-five years of marriage.
In the second chapter of her life, Lois spent nearly 25 years in a relationship with Dennis Downey, who preceded her in death in 2019.
For many years, she worked as a legal secretary for the legal team of Coppenger, Carter, Schrempf, and Blaine in Alton, Illinois, and also for Walton J. Barnes, Attorney at Law, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Lois loved to laugh, travel, read, and spend time with the people she loved most.
Lois is also preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Schuppan and both her parents, Helen (Thauwald) and Werner Schuppan.
Her memory will live on through her family. She is survived by her children, Stephanie (Al) Greenhalgh and Drew Podhorn; her granddaughter, Lorine Podhorn; and her sister, Sharon Nelson; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Lois at The Steakhouse Bar at Tony’s in Alton, Illinois (102 WEST 9TH STREET, ALTON, IL 62002) on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 4-7 p.m.
