Leo Chester Cox of Alton IL, 71, received rest and peace at 10:33 am Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Alton Memorial with his family by his side.  He was born September 29, 1942 in St. Louis, Mo. and was the son of the late Norval and Amanda Butler Cox.He married Charlene Lucas, June 4, 1960, in addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Amanda Matilda Cox and a brother, Donald Cox.He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter Wendy Gray, of Alton, three sons, Cleveland (Lisa) Cox of Liberty Township, OH , Leo Cox Jr., of Alton, and Michael (Tonya) Cox of Bethalto, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild. In addition to his children, he is survived by two brothers Norval Cox Jr., of Alton, Samuel Cox, Sr. of Jacksonville, FL and Barbara Weeden (Curtis Faulkner) of Alton plus a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Leo was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1964. He worked at General Motors in the parts division. He retired from Shell Oil. He was very active in the community. He was a member of the 100 Black Men of Alton, American Legion Post 354, Friends of the 60’s/ABA, NAACP, The Leathernecks, The Urban League and the Wood River Refinery Retired Assoc.Leo was on bowling teams (Magnificent Seven and Just Us). He loved golfing, dancing and going to Alton High games.Catholic Prayer Service on Friday March 14, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Cathy M. Williams & Sons Funeral Home in AltonVisitation on Saturday March 15, 2014 from 9 a.m. until itme of service at 11 a.m. at St. James Baptist Church in Alton.
