LaVerne Knauel

JERSEYVILLE – LaVerne (Spanholtz) Knauel, 96, died at 2:07 a.m., Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.

She was born in Edwardsville on May 11, 1921, one of four children born to the late Benjamin and Hanna (Rembka) Spanholtz.

LaVerne grew up in Edwardsville where she graduated from Edwardsville High School.

She married Dr. Charles William Knauel on August 1, 1942 in Edwardsville and together they were blessed with 46 years of marriage before his death on November 17, 1988.

LaVerne and Charles married life quickly took them to Fairhaven, NY where they resided while Charles was stationed during his time in the military. In 1950 they relocated to Jersey County and Charles opened up his business as a Chiropractor in Jerseyville. They built a home on Highway 109 just south of Jerseyville where they raised their family and shared many wonderful memories together. Later in life, LaVerne sold the home in the country and moved to town, where she has remained for the past several years.

In her younger years, she and Charles were fundamental in the development of the Civil Defense Unit in Jersey County and enjoyed making wooden crafts together, which they sold for many years at the Kampsville Frontier Days. She was also a former member of the Ladies of the Moose and worked at various establishments throughout the area in her lifetime, including K-Mart in Alton, where she retired after many years as a bookkeeper.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Katherine Cox of Jerseyville; Cynthia & Marv Beckham of Flagstaff, AZ; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald & Bonnie Knauel of Phoenix, AZ; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, September 18, 2017 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday.

Burial will take place alongside her husband at the Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
