Kevin Shaffer

Kevin Lee Shaffer, 67 of Glen Carbon IL, born August 13, 1956, in Salem, IL passed away Wednesday, January 31st, 2024, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis MO.

He lived in Salem, Granite City, and Madison, IL before moving to Glen Carbon and was a 1974 graduate of Collinsville High School, where he was a member of the school band, tennis team and Air Force ROTC program. He played tenor sax in the local band “Novis IV” and was a member of the Troy and Granite City Community Concert Bands and the GC Swing Band.  

He attended college at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) where he received a B.S. in Information Technology. While at SIUE, he was a member and officer of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, the university’s Air Force ROTC program and a dispatcher for campus police.  After receiving his degree Kevin worked in the IT field as a Programming Specialist at Prairie Farms Dairy, Scott Air Force Base, West Aeronautics, Enterprise Corporation, Magellan Healthcare, Centene and eventually retiring from Prime Therapeutics in St. Louis.  He was an aviation buff, loved solving the New York Times crossword puzzles, excelled at trivia matches with friends and enjoyed numerous vacation adventures with his wife and daughter.  His favorite sports activities included tennis, archery, cycling, white water rafting and kayaking. 

He married Cathy Ann Butler in 1985, who preceded him in death Sept. 18, 1997.  

He married Alicia (Hendrickson) Popilchak on March 29, 2002, and adopted Victoria Nicole Popilchak on Aug. 19, 2002.  They are members of Troy Methodist Church in Troy, IL.

Kevin seemed to know someone wherever he went and always had a positive attitude about life, even after he became ill.  He was a loving and devoted husband and father, and a good friend to all.  He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on.

He was also preceded in death by his sister Kristi E. Shaffer and father Luther “Bud” Shaffer. 

He is survived by his wife Alicia Shaffer, daughters Victoria Nicole and Lauren Elizabeth, mother Sharon Sue Shaffer, sister Kathy (Irenaeus "IJ") Siekmann, and nieces Gabrielle and Tiffani Siekmann.

Visitation:  Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Rd., Glen Carbon, IL 62034 and from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday February 5, 2024 at the funeral home.

Funeral: Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Rd., Glen Carbon, IL 62034.  Interment will be held at 11 a.m., Monday February 5, 2024 in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
