Kenneth W. Whaley

Kenneth W. Whaley, age 83, passed away at 5:53 pm Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born on August 7, 1926 in Batchtown, IL to Esther Mae Engle and Curtis Waters. He was raised from infancy by Lucretia and Sam Whaley in Grafton, IL.

He married his childhood sweetheart Margaret C. Keller October 19, 1946 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grafton. She entered into Heaven on July 22, 2009.

He was a used car sales manager at Roberts Ford for many years. He then opened Ken Whaley Auto Sales from which he retired in 1991. Ken was an avid hunter and loved to fish and be outdoors.

He served his country in the US Navy in the Philippines during WWII as a signal man. He was a member of the VFW Post 1308.

He is survived by three daughters and their spouses Mary "Kathy" Whaley of Godfrey, Barbara (Dennis) Gray of Godfrey, Sandra (James) Hutchins of Bethalto; six grandchildren Victoria Gray of Creve Coeur, MO, Kenneth and his wife Shaana Gray of Carrollton, Katie and husband Tony Cain of Godfrey, Christina, Tyler and Cole Hutchins of Bethalto; five great grandchildren Lauren, Kaitlyn and Jenna Gray of Carrollton, Audrey and Caroline Cain of Godfrey, a half brother Stephen Gilbert of CO and a niece Carol Galvin of Lockport, IL.

He is preceded in death by his mother Esther Mae Sheridan, Lucretia (Whaley)Purcell and a brother Melvin Lee Waters.

Per his wishes cremation services will be accorded.

Private burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park with military rites by Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.

Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey will be in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Siteman Center for Cancer Research.
