Kenneth Kruckeberg

Kenneth Kruckeberg, 89, went to be with the Lord at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday February 7, 2009 at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born on July 16, 1919 in Moro, the son of Chris & Gertrude (Lerche) Kruckeberg.

He married Hertha M. Brewer on October 21, 1944, in Montgomery, AL. She preceded him in death on December 23, 2005.

He served his country as a pilot in the Army Air Corp as a Second Lieutenant during WWII. He was an aviation enthusiast who flew his own plane with his wife Hertha to Alaska, Florida, and California. He was also an aircraft maintenance inspector. They also took cruises to Germany, through the Panama Canal, and through the Alaskan Inner Passage.

He worked for Shell Refinery where he retired as a pipe fitter.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis W. and Barbara Kruckeberg of Greenwood, IN; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marsha A. and Steven Gerdes of Poulsbo, WA; and Vicky L. Kruckeberg of Winchester, MA; two surviving grandchildren, Kevin & Raven Kruckeberg of Indianapolis, IN, and Kathryn Kruckeberg of Greenwood, IN; one brother, Walter Kruckeberg of Moro; two sisters, Cora Bufe of Bethalto and Nora Imes of Stockton, CA.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by one infant daughter Barbara Jean Kruckeberg; one grandson Dennis Kruckeberg Jr.; one brother, James Kruckeberg.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday February 11, 2009 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday February 12, 2009 with Pastor Lori Schaefer officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military rites by Alton VFW Post 1308.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ in Midway or BJC Hospice.
