Kathryn Phelan

Kathryn Louise “Kit” Phelan, 94, passed away at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Calhoun Nursing & Rehab in Hardin.

She was born on December 2, 1929 in Jerseyville and was the daughter of the late Peter Andrew and Cora Lucille (Overmeyer) Steckel.

Kit graduated with the Class of 1947 from Jersey Township High School, and shortly after accepted a position with the State of Illinois Secretary of State’s office in Springfield, Illinois.

She married Paul Dennis Phelan on July 7, 1951 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, at which time she focused her attention to raising her family. Paul and Kit were the proud parents of two daughters, and shared in 67 years of marriage, prior to his death on January 28, 2019.

Kit was strong in her Catholic Faith and a lifelong member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville.

You would be hard pressed to find someone with more passion and dedication to the game of BINGO, and for over 40 years, Kit played the game as often as she could.

Surviving are two daughters and a son in-law, Janice Phelan of Jerseyville and Michelle and Thomas Goewey of Clarksville, Tennessee; a brother and sister in-law, Jim and Carolyn Steckel of St. Paul, Missouri; as well as a sister in-law, Virginia “Gin” Steckel of Jerseyville.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother in-law, Joan and Jack Lorsbach; a brother, Francis “Jack” Steckel; her father in-law and mother in-law, Patrick and Irene Phelan; as well as brothers in-law and sisters in-law, Ellen Steckel, Catherine and Enloe Waters, Mary Phelan, Theresa and Charles Schmieder, Dorothy and William Murphy, Robert and Alma Phelan and James and Betty Phelan.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville with Father Ramesh Matta officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School, in care of the funeral home.
