Kathryn Ann Powers, 86, died at 11:03 a.m., Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Jersey County on Dec. 6, 1923, one of five children born to the late Peter J. and Magdalena (Abeln) Powers.

She attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School, and graduated from Jersey Township High School in 1941.  She then began working at the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville for a short time before she resumed her education by enrolling at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where she earned both her Bachelors and Masters Degree in Mathematics. Kathryn was a mathematics professor for several universities, including Western Illinois University in Macomb, and Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo, where she retired in 1986.

After her retirement, Kathryn moved back home to Jerseyville, where she was a lifetime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church as well as their Altar Society, enjoyed searching genealogy and was a member of the Jersey County Historical Society, and enjoyed planting flowers and being outdoors on the family farm.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary Powers and Beatrice Powers both of Jerseyville; a brother & sister in law, James & Donna Powers of Jerseyville; two nieces and their spouses, Mary Ann & Tom Bott of Jerseyville and Karen & Roger Arkebauer of Bokelia, Fl.; a great niece, Kathleen Dawson of Sioux Falls, SD.; and two nephews, Devon Bott of Jerseyville, and Dennis and his wife, Jessica, Dawson of Staunton. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Irene M. Powers on Nov. 1, 2002.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a prayer service will be read at 3:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School in Jerseyville or to Masses.
