Kathleen A. "Kathy" Breen, age 84 of Hamel, IL, died Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Arbor Terrace of Glenview in Glenview, IL.

She was born on Saturday, August 5, 1939, in Belleville, IL, the daughter of Walter and Grace (nee Brown) Taff.

On Sunday, June 14, 1959, she married Michael H. Breen.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church; St. Paul Lutheran Church Ladies Aid (Past President); and Madison County Home Extension.

Kathy was born in Belleville, IL, grew up there graduating from Belleville High School in 1957 and then attending Belleville Area College for two years.  Following her marriage, they lived in Quincy, IL; Hanover, KS; moved to Quincy, IL and moved to Hamel, IL in 1969. Her husband worked at the Hamel State Bank retiring as President after many years of service.  He also owned Breen Tax Service for 40 plus years.  In addition to raising her family, Kathy had worked at the Fabric Store in Edwardsville, IL for many years.  She enjoyed playing cards, especially Rummikub.  She also was a fantastic seamstress sewing and quilting.  She enjoyed quilting with the Ladies Aid.

Survivors include: daughter-Kelly L. (Gregory) Ettling, Glenview, IL; daughter-in-law - Theresa S. Breen, Humble, TX; grandchildren - Candace B. Huehls, Indianapolis, IN, Tara C. (Eric) Tracy, Houston, TX, Leigh J. (Gary) Moylan, Northbrook, IL, James M. Ettling, Chicago, IL, and Sean G. (Angela) Ettling, Benton, LA; great grandchildren - Clifford B. Huehls, Indianapolis, IN, Brogan J. Tracy, Houston, TX, Michaela Moylan, Northbrook, IL, and Blair Moylan, Northbrook, IL; sisters - Donna Depper, Belleville, IL and Ruth Dixon, Belleville, IL; brother - David Taff, Belleville, IL; sisters-in-law - Jane Weinreis, Doland, SD, and Sharon Dietz, Easley, SC; brother-in-law - John (Ruth) Breen, Baltic, SD; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: parents Walter A. & Grace R. Taff, nee Brown; husband - Michael H. Breen - died 02/24/2017; son - Douglas B. Breen - died 11/04/2012; brother - George Taft; brothers-in-law - Robert Breen, Frank Breen, Patrick Breen and George Breen; sisters-in-law - Nellie Morse, Vera Stansky and Mary Ann Perman.

Arrangements are being handled by Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel, IL.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday and from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM Tuesday at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, IL.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, IL., with Rev. Benjamin Ball, Pastor, officiating. 

Interment will be at Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Hamel, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Hamel, Illinois.
