Katherine “Kat” Sparks, 94, died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born July 11, 1920 in Alton, she was the daughter of William J. and Myrtle (Kirchhoff) Phillips. She worked in the Tannery in Hartford and later retired as a clerk for the Wonder Bread Store on the Godfrey Road. She married James Guy Sparks in 1940. He preceded her in death in 1995. Surviving are six brothers and sisters, Lucille Johnson of Fieldon, Edwin Phillips of Panama City Beach, FL, Bernice Haworth of Bethalto, Richard Phillips of Alton, Marjorie Colburn of Fosterburg, and Earl Phillips of Grafton, and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Robert Phillips, a sister, Rose Beem and a special friend Don Ott. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2014. Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
